The Mayo Hegar Needle Holder (12cm) is a precision needle holder crafted for controlled, fatigue-free suturing. Its tungsten carbide jaw inserts provide an exceptionally hard, cross-hatched gripping surface that holds fine needles securely without twisting, and dramatically extends the working life of the instrument — the gold-coloured ring handles indicate TC construction.
This is the tungsten carbide version of our most compact Mayo Hegar needle driver. The gold-coloured ring handles are the industry-standard signal that the jaws carry brazed-in tungsten carbide inserts — a gripping surface substantially harder than stainless steel that bites positively into fine needles and keeps doing so through years of clinical use. For clinicians who suture daily at short working lengths, the 12cm TC pairs fingertip-level control with a jaw that simply does not let small needles rotate mid-pass.
The cross-hatched carbide surface is the practical difference you feel: fine curved needles seat squarely, resist twisting as they are driven through resistant skin, and release cleanly for the next bite. Because carbide holds its texture far longer than plain serrations, the instrument delivers a consistent grip over an extended working life — a sensible investment for skin cancer clinics, busy GP procedure rooms and small-animal veterinary theatres. It is TGA-registered, made by an ISO 13485-certified manufacturer, and fully autoclavable alongside the rest of your tray.
Also known as: Mayo-Hegar TC needle driver 12cm, tungsten carbide Mayo Hegar 12cm, gold handle Mayo Hegar needle driver, 12cm carbide needle holder.
Clean promptly after use, ultrasonic clean where available, lubricate the box joint regularly, and sterilise open in an autoclave. Avoid clamping wire or oversized needles beyond the jaw rating to preserve alignment.

Chosen for high-volume fine suturing: excision and flap closures in skin cancer work, facial laceration repair, and delicate closures after minor plastic procedures. In veterinary practice it handles fine-needle skin closures on small animals where needle twist is a constant frustration.

Pick the 12cm TC if you do fine suturing every working day — the carbide inserts keep small needles from twisting and stay grippy long after standard serrations would have smoothed off. If you suture only occasionally, the stainless steel MNH-SS12 does the same job at a lower price. Need more reach or heavier needles? The same TC jaws are available on the 14cm (MNH-TC14) and 16cm (MNH-TC16) bodies. As a rule of thumb: buy TC for your most-used size and SS for backups.

Gold-coloured handles are the recognised industry marking for tungsten carbide jaw inserts. They let theatre and clinic staff distinguish TC instruments from standard stainless steel at a glance on the tray.
The jaws carry brazed-in tungsten carbide inserts, a much harder material that grips needles more positively and keeps its texture far longer than plain serrated steel. The higher purchase price is typically offset by a longer service life.
Considerably longer than standard serrated jaws — carbide is substantially harder than stainless steel, so the cross-hatched texture resists smoothing even under daily use. Inspect the inserts periodically and retire the instrument once a clamped needle can be twisted by hand.
Yes — it is the combination many skin and cosmetic clinicians prefer. The short shaft gives fingertip precision while the carbide grip stops small 5/0 and 6/0 needles rotating as they pass through skin.
No. The instrument is fully autoclavable using the same steam cycle as your stainless steel stock. Just sterilise it open on the first ratchet click and keep it separated from heavy instruments that could chip the insert edges.
If the clinic sutures daily, TC pays for itself in grip consistency and lifespan, especially with fine needles on delicate skin closures. For an occasional-use spare kit, the standard stainless steel 12cm is the economical choice.
Worn or chipped inserts mean the instrument should be taken out of service — a slipping needle is a suturing hazard. At that point most practices replace the instrument; some instrument repairers also offer re-tipping services.
We dispatch within 48 hours from Western Australia. Orders over $150 ship free across our serviced WA areas; below that a $15 flat rate applies, and your GST tax invoice is emailed automatically.
