Overview

The Podiatry Nail Clipper — Curved (15cm) is a professional chiropody instrument built for podiatrists and foot-care nurses. Hardened stainless steel cutting edges shear cleanly through thick, fungal or involuted nails, while the double-spring handle returns smoothly between cuts and reduces hand fatigue across a full clinic day.

The 15cm curved model is the larger of our two concave-jaw nail nippers, and the extra handle length is the point of the design. Longer handles multiply the force delivered at the cutting edge, so heavily thickened, gryphotic (ram's horn) and long-neglected nail plates can be reduced with less effort per cut. Clinicians with larger hands also find the wider span more comfortable than a 13cm instrument over a busy list, particularly when several heavy reductions fall in the same session.

Like every instrument in the range it is built by an ISO 13485-certified manufacturer, is TGA-registered and uses hardened stainless steel jaws that keep their bite through years of steam reprocessing. The concave jaw profile matches the transverse curve of the toenail, letting the blade engage the full width of a thick plate rather than nibbling at one corner, which shortens treatment time and produces a tidier free edge for the patient.

Because this clipper shares its steel and spring design with the 13cm and straight-jaw variants, you can standardise reprocessing and maintenance across your whole nipper set while matching each instrument to the caseload it serves best.

Also known as: Curved nail nipper 15cm, Heavy-duty podiatry nipper, Chiropody nail clipper (curved, large), Concave-jaw toenail nipper 15cm.

Care & sterilisation

Scrub cutting edges after each patient, ultrasonic clean where possible and sterilise open in an autoclave. Store dry to protect the cutting edges.

Clinical applications

Podiatry clinics · Hospital high-risk foot services · Residential aged care · Community and domiciliary nursing · Diabetes foot clinics · Correctional and remote health services

Common procedures

Chosen for reduction of grossly thickened, gryphotic and onychauxic toenails where leverage matters, as well as routine nail cutting in high-risk and diabetic foot programs. It also handles bulk reduction of fungal nail plates before topical treatment or further mechanical debridement.

Recommended users

Podiatrists · High-risk foot clinicians · Foot-care and community nurses · Aged-care nursing staff · Chiropodists

Buying guide

Pick the 15cm curved nipper when raw cutting power is the priority: gryphotic nails, heavy fungal thickening and older patients whose nails have gone years between reductions. If most of your caseload is routine nail care on average or smaller feet, the 13cm curved model offers nimbler control with the same steel and spring. Prefer the straight-jaw 15cm sibling when your technique is to cut straight across, particularly for patients prone to ingrowing nails. At the same price point, many practices simply buy one of each length and let the day's caseload decide.

Care & maintenance

  • Cleaning: Rinse promptly, then brush the jaws, box joint and springs with an enzymatic or neutral-pH detergent to clear nail dust and debris. An ultrasonic bath reaches the pivot recesses a brush cannot.
  • Sterilisation: Autoclave in the open position following your clinic's validated steam cycle; process inside a pouch or tray if you need to maintain sterility until the next patient.
  • Maintenance: Lubricate the joint with instrument milk or a steam-permeable lubricant after cleaning, and inspect the edges under good light for burrs or flattening. Address stiffness early — a dragging pivot accelerates edge wear.
  • Storage: Keep the nipper in a dry, ventilated cabinet or lidded tray once fully dry, separated from heavier instruments that could knock the cutting edges.

Frequently asked questions

When should I choose a 15cm nail nipper over the 13cm size?

Choose 15cm when leverage matters more than compactness — grossly thickened, gryphotic or long-neglected nails, or when you have larger hands. The 13cm size suits finer work, smaller feet and practitioners who prefer a shorter span.

Do longer handles really give more cutting power?

Yes. A nipper is a lever, so the extra 2cm of handle length increases the force delivered at the jaws for the same hand effort. On very dense nail plates that difference is easy to feel.

Can this nipper manage gryphotic (ram's horn) toenails?

It is the model in our range best suited to them. The long handles supply the leverage and the hardened stainless steel edges shear through the thickened, layered plate; severe cases are usually reduced progressively in several cuts.
