The Foerster Sponge Forceps — Straight, Serrated (25cm) is precision-machined from surgical-grade stainless steel with carefully aligned tips for a secure, predictable grip. Whether grasping tissue, holding swabs or achieving haemostasis, the instrument delivers consistent spring tension and tactile control.
This 25cm Foerster is the long-reach member of our sponge-holding forceps range, built for swabbing and prepping where a 20cm instrument runs out of length — deep operative cavities, large prep fields and obstetric and gynaecological work. The extended shanks keep the operator's gloved hand well clear of the field while the oval fenestrated jaws, finished with fine serrations, keep a saturated gauze swab locked exactly where it was loaded. For theatres that already run the 20cm Foerster, adding this length completes a short-and-long pairing that covers virtually every swabbing task.
The instrument is TGA-registered, produced by an ISO 13485-certified manufacturer, and machined from surgical-grade stainless steel throughout. The ring-handle ratchet closes with a positive, graduated action so the swab hold can be matched to the task — light for blotting delicate areas, firm for vigorous antiseptic prepping — and the straight jaw configuration tracks predictably at depth where a curved instrument can wander.
Also known as: Foerster sponge-holding forceps 25cm, Long sponge holder, Swab holding forceps 25cm, Ring forceps long, Foerster swab forceps.
Clean promptly after use, paying attention to serrations and box joints. Sterilise in an open position and inspect tip alignment regularly to maintain performance.

The 25cm Foerster is used for antiseptic skin preparation over large fields, deep-cavity swabbing and blotting during abdominal and pelvic procedures, and swab handling in obstetric and gynaecological work such as post-delivery swabbing. It also serves wherever gauze must be placed or retrieved at depth under control.

Choose this 25cm Foerster when reach is the deciding factor: deep cavities, large abdominal or pelvic prep fields, and obstetric work all favour the longer shanks. For superficial prep and compact minor-ops trays, the 20cm Foerster (FSH-SS20) is easier to manoeuvre and stow. If your facility follows traditional dressing-pack conventions you may prefer the Rampley pattern instead — functionally equivalent, offered here in 18cm and 21cm. The price difference between Foerster lengths is only a dollar, so select on clinical reach rather than cost.

Whenever reach matters: deep-cavity swabbing, large abdominal or pelvic prep fields, and obstetric or gynaecological work. The extra length keeps your hand clear of the field and the solution.
Yes — the pattern is commonly used in O&G for swabbing and handling gauze at depth, and its fenestrated jaws see wide use in these settings. The 25cm length is the usual pick for that work.
They are closely related — ovum forceps share the ring-handled, fenestrated-jaw design, and the terms are sometimes used loosely for the same pattern. If your protocol names a specific instrument, match on jaw style, serration and length.
Use enough gauze to fill the jaws, seat it through both fenestrations, and close the ratchet a position firmer than you would for surface prep. The serrated jaws on this model are designed to hold saturated gauze under load.
With prompt cleaning, routine lubrication and open-position autoclaving, surgical-grade stainless steel instruments commonly serve for many years of regular cycles. Lifespan depends far more on handling and care than on cycle count alone.
The Foerster family includes both; this model is the straight configuration, which tracks predictably at depth and suits most prepping and swabbing tasks. Curved jaws are chosen when working around anatomical curves.
Orders over $150 ship free across our serviced Western Australian areas; below that a flat $15 applies. All prices already include GST and dispatch is within 48 hours.
Warning signs are a ratchet that slips under closing pressure, feels gritty, or no longer holds its position during a firm tug test on a loaded swab. Any of these means the instrument should be withdrawn and replaced.
