Nitrile Exam Gloves: The GP Clinic Buying Guide (Sizing, Thickness & Cost per Glove)

Why nitrile has become the default exam glove in WA clinics, how to size your team properly, and the box-size maths that decides what you really pay per glove.

Exam gloves are the single most-consumed item in general practice — a busy clinic can go through thousands a month. Nitrile has overtaken latex as the default for good reasons, but "nitrile" on the box hides real differences in thickness, grip and per-glove cost. Here's what actually matters when you restock.

Why nitrile won

Three things ended latex's run in the treatment room. First, allergy safety: latex sensitisation affects both staff and patients, and a latex-free room removes the risk entirely. Second, puncture resistance: nitrile resists tears and punctures better than vinyl and comparably to latex, which matters whenever sharps are on the tray. Third, chemical resistance: nitrile stands up to disinfectants and cytotoxic agents far better than vinyl gloves do.

Fit: size your team, not the order form

A glove that's too large ruins instrument feel; too tight accelerates hand fatigue and tears at the cuff. The quick test: with fingers together, measure around the palm at the knuckles — roughly 7–8 cm equates to Small, 8–9 cm Medium, 9–10 cm Large, over 10 cm X-Large. Keep at least two sizes at every station: the right glove for whoever answers the treatment-room bell beats a one-size drawer every time.

The box-size maths

Most exam gloves sell in boxes of 100, but 200-count boxes are increasingly common for high-turnover clinics — and the per-glove price is usually where the saving hides. A $23.95 box of 200 works out to about 12 cents a glove; the same money on two 100-boxes often lands at 15–18 cents. Over a clinic year that difference funds a good deal of your other consumables. The trade-off: 200-boxes suit your most-used sizes; keep the fringe sizes in 100s so they don't expire in the drawer.
